2017-04-06 Trip Day 11

Day 11, April 6

On Cruise - Rüdesheim

On the Rhine
Wake up cruising past Boppard and nothing to do until after lunch so an unusually relaxed day.  Seeing many castles along both sides of the river.

Look at the slope of these vineyards!

Fascinating that all the houses in the village are the same colour.  This was a common sight.

More vineyards that look impossible to manage.

There's a real traffic problem at this bend in the river.  Not enough room for these long boats to pass.

Especially when some of them are two strapped together!

But solved with traffic lights and a control tower.

Note the speed of the water here (the buoy is stationary).
That represents a lot of water rushing down to the sea.

Why would you build such a tower at the end of this little island?
It's not much more than a sand bar!

The "breakwater" seems to be there to manage currents from the river entering from the side, but there is enough flow to result in higher water one side than the other.
Note the flow over the top.

Video

In the afternoon dock at Rüdesheim.  There, we tour Siegfried’s Music Cabinet (music machines museum, sorry no photos, but an amazing collection of musical machines)

Further cruising overnight towards the Main (pronounced "mine") junction.  At Mainz, we will leave the Rhine which would take us to Basel.
